About Temper

Want to help tens of thousands of people to adjust work to their life as opposed to the other way around?

We are on a mission to make the labor market more fair, accessible, and efficient by transforming it through technology. The next generation of workers want to be able to work at the tap of a button. With more flexibility, better earnings, and more control.
And that is exactly what our tech-enabled shift-based platform provides. We empower people with opportunity.

Best of all: we are just getting started. Over the past few years, we have proven our product works in the Netherlands and we are now preparing for rapid international expansion. This means we are rebuilding our entire service stack to offer a product that works seamlessly at scale. Using cutting-edge technology to improve every aspect of our business.

At Temper, you have the opportunity to make an impact. One of our most important values is that we all own it (quite literally as you will see in our equity plan). This means we ask you to step up and take responsibility to bring Temper to the next level. In the end, we strongly believe we will only be successful as long as we have a relentless focus on our users. We pride ourselves in saying that we always do it for them.

Our unique culture is embodied by the great group of talent that has joined over the past years. A diverse bunch of people (17 different nationalities), some of which work from our office with a bar in Amsterdam while others work fully remote (8 countries and counting!). Make sure to ask them during the process what they believe makes working at Temper so rewarding.

The Role

As a Head of Engineering you will be part of Temper's core, carrying the leadership role in the engineering department being the right hand of our CPTO. You would be contributing to the technical vision & strategy, and steering technical design & implementation as well as overall technical governance of our web and mobile platform in order to support the business for both sides of our marketplace. The Head of Engineering leads the development teams and collaborates with other business departments in operations, strategy, legal and finance in order to implement ongoing process improvements impacting internal and external stakeholders.

Leadership & Strategy:
You, as a leader, have a strong vision for the department and promote the best engineering organizational patterns and practices. In this strategic role, you maintain a high overview and insights into technical dependencies of different departments and you will contribute to company-wide technical plans related to expansion, data strategy, compliance and operational excellence.

You will be working closely with architects, technical leaders for web frontend, backend and mobile, qa, data and infrastructure and cultivate a mature engineering culture. Your counterparts will be the Heads of Product, Quality and Research and Design and you will also join forces with the Product Ops & Development Manager in further maturing the engineering operations.

Hands-on Technical Leadership:

The Head of Engineering is up to date of cutting-edge technologies and industry best practices. Due to your past extensive product, backend (preferably also php) experience, familiarisation in infrastructure architecture (saas production, cloud) and thorough understanding of modern technologies, patterns & architecture paradigms (such as DDD, event sourcing), you are able to steer our engineering team to ship high-quality software and adopt best practices in the engineering life-cycle.

You tackle high-level challenges and balance quality software with speed of execution, impact vs risk.

You will lead the execution for value delivery, stability, quality, performance & security of the business’s core platform and the overall extensibility of the architecture. You are the key stakeholder on development lifecycle process improvements and driver of engineering operational excellence. You will be an agent of change while being 10-20% hands-on: contribute to improvements to solution and application architecture. You will be leading critical engineering involved processes such as Incident management.

Collaboration and People Skills

The role of the Head of Engineering is also a highly collaborative one. Because of your quality to discuss at the right level of abstraction and ability to develop relationships with the key stakeholders within Temper, you are able to suggest and proactively co-create solutions to keep up with the growth and our arising challenges. You will be successful on this part of your role if you will build bridges with other departments together with the needed managers and contribute to co-departmental efforts (e.g. data strategy & architecture aligned with our BI team).

Together with our Technical Leads you help to continuously improve and grow our teams. You guide a demanding transformational phase both in terms of organization as well as technology scaling and maturing. As a leading example when it comes to proactive communication, you provide guidance, and encouragement. You will translate our product & technical vision into best technical design decisions while cultivating an engineering environment where ownership, accountability and co-creation is appreciated.
Your objective will be to nurture a healthy product engineering culture. Empower our engineers to take responsibility for their personal development path and team goals. You will be owning the development framework to improve the skills and seniority of the engineering team members in collaboration with the technical leaders experts in their areas.
